History

The East Asian Medical Students’ Conference, more fondly known as EAMSC, began with an inspiration to participate in activities that aim to resolute or ameliorate healthcare problems through a network of medical students studying in East Asia. Nowadays, it is an inimitable opportunity for the East Asian medical students to exchange ideas, knowledge and cultural understandings with their counterparts in other parts of Asia, Oceania and beyond.

It is an annual conference with the majority of the delegates from across East Asia. Every year, the Organising Committee of the conference arranges a 5 day conference packed with academic and cultural activities surrounding a chosen theme. Year after year, EAMSC continues to inspire medical students to examine international health issues closely, to evaluate the role of a medical student in promotion of public health and to think beyond the scope of classroom knowledge.

Back in 1987, during the 8th Asian Medical Students’ Conference in Malaysia, delegates from Taiwan and Korea agreed about the need for a more specialized conference between the two countries. They formed the “Korea-China medical students’ conference” (also known as the ”Sino-Korea Medical Students’ Conference”). In 1988, the 1st conference was held in Korea with the theme of “The Present Status and Future of Medical Service in Asia”.

By 1994, when the 15^th AMSC was held in Thailand, Hong Kong and Japan also decided to participate in the Sino-Korea Medical Students’ Conference. Thus, the conference decided to change its name to the East Asian Medical Students Conference.

The conference is now held annually in January or February each year, and is hosted by various East Asian countries.
